Homemade Dog Treats

Even though Astro’s not your biological child, he might as well be. He’s got the life – trips to the park, evening strolls, all the toys and treats the little darling could want. And yet, those pleading eyes beg for more. What’s a responsible pet parent to do? How about mixing up a homemade batch of Fur Baby Favorites? Made with a pup-pleasing dash of baby food, they’re almost as sweet as his puppy pictures.

These tasty little goodies are so easy to make, you can pop a batch in the oven in less then ten minutes. All you need are a few household staples and any baby food you think your dog will like. Just skip anything with onions as they can cause real health problems for dogs – plus avoid baby food with corn if your dog is allergic. And if your pup is sensitive to wheat, brown rice flour works just as well. To make sure you add right amount, mix the flour into a slightly sticky dough you can roll into balls.

The Scoop:

Here’s what you’ll need for Fur Baby Favorites.

  • 2 jars of baby food, 4-ounce size
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2-teaspoon salt
  • 2-1/2 cups of whole-wheat flour

First beat baby food, eggs and salt together in a large bowl. Stir in flour until the dough comes together. Then roll the dough into ½ inch balls and flatten them with a spoon on a baking sheet. You may also roll the dough into whatever shapes you’d like. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes at 350°F (or up to 40 minutes for a crunchier texture). Cool the treats on wire racks and store in an airtight container. This mix makes about 60 treats.
